JIM THOMPSON AUTUMN 2006
THE VOYAGER COLLECTION

The Voyager Collection brings together a glamorous and sumptuous collection of fabrics that is reminiscent of the historical beginnings of Jim Thompson silks in the 1940’s.

Thai silk was first brought onto the international stage in 1947 when Jim Thompson presented the “crème de la crème” of Manhattan with his striking iridescent silks, which he himself had concocted while working with weavers in Thailand. Unexpected mixtures of colors such as emerald green and magenta, turquoise blue and shocking pink gave results that were so mouth-watering and ground-breaking that these silks easily attracted much publicity and press.

These eye-catching, exotic products soon won the admiration and approval of the editor of Vogue magazine and the then authority of American fashion, Edna Woolman Chase, who described these silks as a “magnificent new discovery” and henceforth Thai silk made its international debut.

Soon after, Jim Thompson silks made its way to the theatrical world of Broadway in the musical “The King and I” and onto more glamorous Hollywood sets. By 1959, Thai silk had won international acclaim and was soon to be found in sumptuous surroundings such as suites of the Savoy Hotel in London and the Canaletto Room in Windsor Castle.

The glamour and sophistication live on in the Autumn 2006 Voyager Collection where the finest in weaving techniques as well as cutting-edge technology and design innovation remain the cornerstones of the Jim Thompson tradition. Rich and glamorous, the Voyager Collection highlights Jim Thompson’s infinite expertise in creating luxurious fabrics with breathtaking color combinations and original engaging designs.
