NO. 9 THOMPSON – ODYSSEY COLLECTION

ODYSSEY is the first collection from No.9 Thompson, the new brand from Jim Thompson.

Designed by Richard Smith, No.9 Thompson will introduce successive collections of prints and wovens drawn from a wide variety of sources and inspirations. The unifying theme will be one of relaxed, casual elegance, with an emphasis on accessibility.

THE ODYSSEY COLLECTION
The new collection takes its inspiration from the story of Jim Thompson’s life-changing journey between New York and Bangkok where he arrived in 1945 — a time of endless excitement and discovery for the young architect. Born to a life of privilege, Jim Thompson was steeped in the sophisticated energy of 1930s Manhattan. But an army posting to Thailand changed his world forever, and he soon decided to make a new life in its vibrant and exotic capital. An encounter with one of the last remaining families of traditional silk weavers in Bangkok gave him the focus he needed for his energy and creativity — the establishment of the Thai silk industry as an international presence.

In Odyssey we have drawn together all the facets of Jim Thompson’s life which brought him so much inspiration during these years — his love of music, gardens and architecture; his fascination with color and texture; his passion for silk. The result is a combination which could have been tailor-made for today’s market — cotton mixes with a lustrous, silky quality; silks mixed with cotton to broaden their usability; and prints in a broad color palette ranging from neutrals and soft pastels to vibrant reds, rich plums and chocolates.

NO. 9 THOMPSON – ODYSSEY PRINTS

JIM’S GARDEN (2042)
100% linen
Inspired by his passion for gardens, this design combines North American varieties of rose with orchids and other exotic Asian flowers. Butterflies hover between the bursting bouquets. The lightly worn print mark on a rustic 100% linen gives it a subtly vintage feel.

SIAM DREAM (2037)
51% linen, 49% cotton
12,000 Martindale Rubs
This narrative design incorporates landmarks from Jim Thompson’s transformation from New York architect to doyen of the Thai silk industry. The Chrysler building, Thai elephants and ceremonial parasols are printed with a soft strié effect, loosely emulating a traditional ikat fabric. The twill effect in the heavy linen mix base cloth pulls the various elements together.

JAZZ (2038)
100% cotton
28,500 Martindale Rubs
A large, fun design, it resonates with the abstract rhythms of American music from the first half of the twentieth century. The loose brush strokes and simulated wicker work panels have the feeling of a cubist painting. The image knits well with the cotton herringbone ground.

FALLING WATER (2040)
65% rayon, 35% ramie
56,000 Martindale Rubs
Six wide ribbons of three different colors fall down this heavily textured cloth, which is equally successful either as curtaining or as upholstery. The luminosity of the printing and subtle sheen within the weave of the fabric combine to exploit falling light to full effect.

LONG ISLAND CHECK (2039)
100% cotton
44,000 Martindale Rubs
Conjures up images of afternoons spent on a sun-bleached verandah overlooking the sea. The scale of the print, the design’s non-direction and textured cotton base cloth make it perfect for upholstery and loose covers.

CANDY TWIST (2041)
70% cotton, 30% silk
Jim Thompson fell in love with silk when he arrived in Bangkok. Candy Twist’s pinstripe ground is a silk and cotton mix — silk takes color beautifully and gives the fabric an irridescent quality whilst the cotton gives it stability. The large scale flowers and leaves of the printed design are painted in a simplified deco style — these give an extra dimension to the the fabric as it hangs in folds.

NO. 9 THOMPSON – ODYSSEY WOVENS

LEGEND (2030)
68% cotton, 32% polyester
40,000 Martindale Rubs
LEGEND is a stunning cotton mix. It has a subtle sheen that works with the different warp and weft to emulate 4 ply silk. Available in 43 gorgeous colors, it has a wonderful drape, achieves 40,000 rubs in the Martindale test. It is the most versatile of cloths.

ODYSSEY CHECK AND STRIPE (2031,2032)
75% cotton, 25% polyester
40,000 Martindale Rubs
Share the same construction as Legend. The cross colours produced by the woven pattern further enhance the lustrous quality. Colorings cover the neutral family and stretch to shades of cerise and peacock so loved by Jim Thompson.

VOYAGE CHECK AND STRIPE (2035,2036)
70% cotton, 30% silk
Voyage check and stripe are each a silk and cotton mix. The clear colors of this pretty co-ordinating check are inspired by “preppy” shirts. Where a colored weft has been used, the mood becomes much richer, producing lustrous golds, pewters and plums. We have used the stripe as a base cloth for the printed design CANDY TWIST.

DISCOVERY(2043)
80% cotton, 20% polyester
63,000 Martindale Rubs
Chenille and unevenly twisted cotton yarns in the weft produce an irregular vintage effect in this twill fabric. The palette of 32 well thought out colors and an incredible 63,000 rubs will make this one of the most useable plains on the market.

QUEST(2034)
58% cotton, 42% polyester
42,000 Martindale Rubs
Quest is a gorgeously heavy cotton mix with a honeycomb construction. The overall palette is one of neutrals enhanced by tiny flashes of accent colors in the weft, which give it a tweedy effect — perfect for giving a little sparkle to a neutral color scheme. It achieves 42,000 rubs in the Martindale test.

TRAVEL (2033)
63% cotton, 37% polyester
36,000/27,000 Martindale Rubs
Travel is a clever reversible check. One side has a tightly woven construction, with subtle shifts of texture and luminosity within the different squares, achieving 36,000 rubs. Turn it over and the contrast and intensity of color becomes much greater where the chenille yarns sit on the surface of the fabric, yet it is still suitable for everyday upholstery. (Reverse side: 27,000 rubs)
